Claude Code 2.1.318 Repairs Session Recovery and MCP Configuration Handling

Anthropic published Claude Code 2.1.318 on November 4 with fixes for lost resumed conversations and MCP configuration saves. For Unreal C++ and Unity C# teams, the relevant story is agent reliability rather than a new engine integration.

Claude Code 2.1.318 Repairs Session Recovery and MCP Configuration Handling

Long-running coding sessions can become fragile when an assistant loses context or silently fails to save configuration. Anthropic's Claude Code 2.1.318, published on November 4, 2026, addresses several such behaviors. The improvements are particularly relevant when a coding agent is asked to work through interconnected Unreal Engine C++ modules or a Unity C# project over multiple sessions.

One fix addresses a regression introduced in version 2.1.314. In certain circumstances, attempting to continue a session after repeated malformed tool calls could lose earlier conversation context. Version 2.1.318 corrects that problem. Context recovery matters because an agent may otherwise forget decisions made at the beginning of a refactor, even when the original code files remain available.

Several changes concern Model Context Protocol servers. Anthropic says it fixed an issue where commands adding or removing MCP servers could save configuration without acquiring the expected file lock. It also addresses cases involving servers that exit during a version probe, reducing repeated handshake failures. These are infrastructure details, but they can affect a workflow that relies on a connection from the agent to an editor or asset tool.

The release also covers misleading success reports when configuration cannot be written on a shared network home directory, and permission prompts accidentally answered by keys typed at the wrong moment. On macOS, another fix targets sessions with many simultaneous Bash processes that could stall while memory use grew. The changes do not guarantee that every possible permission or process-management problem has disappeared.

Game developers should distinguish improvements to the coding tool from changes to the game engine. This version does not add a new Unreal Blueprint editor, Unity renderer or 3D generator. It improves the reliability of an agent that may already be connected to those tools through separate integrations. Individual MCP adapters remain responsible for their own compatibility and permissions.

An appropriate evaluation uses a disposable repository with one small task spanning two sessions. Make an intentional checkpoint, stop the agent, resume the conversation and ask it to summarize the files and constraints it previously saw. Separately, test an MCP server configuration change and verify that the saved file actually reflects the command. Review the resulting patch and compile before accepting it.

The broader lesson is that sustained AI-assisted development needs recoverable state and explicit verification. Better session handling can make workflows less frustrating, but source control, backups and a clear boundary on file-editing permissions remain essential.

Claude Code 2.1.318 is therefore a maintenance release worth noting for teams operating agents as development tools, especially when long context, external tool connections and multiple terminals are part of normal work.
